An ancient white grape from France's Jura, which became famous in Australia through a case of mistaken identity.
History
Savagnin is an old variety from the Jura, where it makes the oxidative vin jaune. It is the parent of many grapes, and Gewürztraminer is an aromatic form of it.
Savagnin in Australia
In 2009, DNA testing revealed that vines imported into Australia as Albariño were actually Savagnin. Many producers relabelled their wines, and Savagnin is now grown in its own right in regions including the Adelaide Hills and Victoria.
Tasting notes
Medium-bodied with high acidity. Expect citrus, green apple and pear, with a savoury, nutty or saline edge.
