Red variety

Cabernet Franc

The aromatic parent of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, valued for its perfume and fresh, medium-bodied style.

History

Cabernet Franc probably originated in the Basque Country of Spain and spread into south-west France. It is an important blending grape in Bordeaux, particularly in Saint-Émilion, and makes red wines on its own in the Loire Valley, in Chinon, Bourgueil and Saumur-Champigny.

DNA studies show it is a parent of both Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

Cabernet Franc in Australia

Cabernet Franc has long been part of Bordeaux-style blends in Australia, especially in Margaret River, Coonawarra and the Yarra Valley.

Varietal Cabernet Franc has grown in popularity since the 2010s, with lighter, fresher styles from the Adelaide Hills, the Yarra Valley and the Clare Valley.

Tasting notes
