A juicy, high-acid red grape from Piedmont, popular for its bright cherry fruit and soft tannins.
History
Barbera has been grown in Piedmont for centuries and is one of Italy's most planted red grapes. It makes everyday and serious wines in Asti and Alba, and travelled with Italian migrants to Argentina and California.
Barbera in Australia
Barbera was among the Italian varieties planted in Australia from the 1960s and 70s, notably in Mudgee and the King Valley, where Italian-Australian families have championed it.
It is also grown in McLaren Vale, the Adelaide Hills and Heathcote.
Tasting notes
Medium-bodied with high acidity and soft, low tannins. Expect sour cherry, red plum and blackberry, with a hint of spice and herbs; oak-aged versions add vanilla and richness.
