Riverland

South Australia's largest wine region, an irrigated area along the Murray River.

History

Irrigation along the Murray began in the 1880s, when the Chaffey brothers founded Renmark. The Riverland became the backbone of Australia's bulk wine production, growing grapes for cask and value wines.

Since the 2000s many growers have also turned to heat-tolerant Mediterranean varieties and smaller-batch wines.

Wines of Riverland

Large volumes of Shiraz, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and a growing number of alternative varieties such as Fiano, Montepulciano, Nero d'Avola and Vermentino.
