Whistler Wines

Whistler Wines is a family-owned Barossa winery founded by Martin Pfeiffer, a former head vineyard manager at Penfolds and a third-generation grape grower. Grape growing has been the Pfeiffer way of life for four generations, from Albert Heinrich Pfeiffer, who worked his Riverland vineyard barefoot with his Clydesdale, to his son Hubert at Loxton, and then Martin, who raised his own children at Penfolds' Kalimna Estate.

Martin and his wife Sally bought the Heysen Estate property, at first farming crops and sheep while the family hand-planted 3,000 trees over 15 years to define the future vineyard blocks. In 1994 they planted Shiraz cuttings from Penfolds' Grange vineyard (the Kalimna 3C clone), followed by Semillon, and the first Whistler Shiraz went to bottle soon after. The wines won early recognition, including Best White Wine of Show for the 2000 Estate Semillon at the Barossa Wine Show and a place among the World's Top 10 Shiraz for the 2006 Estate Shiraz in the Winestate awards.

The next generation brought organic and biodynamic practices to the vineyards, and Whistler was named Best Small Cellar Door in the Barossa by GT Wine Magazine. Martin and Sally have since retired, and their son Sam and his wife Kelsey run the business, making handcrafted, estate-grown wines across the drink-now Crafted range and the more traditional Estate and Reserve ranges.
