Trofeo Estate

Trofeo Estate is a family-owned boutique winery, cellar door and restaurant at the foothills of Red Hill on the Mornington Peninsula, overlooking 50 acres of vineyard. The venue occupies a former passionfruit cannery from around 1930, whose tall ceilings, exposed red brick and concrete floors still shape its character.

Jim and Kathy Manolios bought the estate in 2012 and named it Trofeo, Italian for trophy, after Jim's motorsport company. With founding winemaker Richard Darby they revived the vineyard using organic and biodynamic principles. Jim, who has a science degree in biochemistry and family wine roots on the Greek island of Samos going back more than 300 years, wanted to make wine in its purest form without oak barrels. After researching alternatives, he and Richard settled on terracotta amphorae made from Tuscan clay, and Trofeo is now the largest producer of amphora-aged wine in the Southern Hemisphere, making cool-climate wines from Chardonnay to Shiraz from hand-picked Mornington Peninsula fruit.

The cellar door offers daily tastings from Thursday to Monday, a Friday aperitivo hour and behind-the-scenes tours of the vines, ageing room and winery, and the cannery is a popular wedding venue.
