Thompson Estate is a family winery at Wilyabrup in Margaret River. Jane and Peter Thompson bought the property in 1994, planted Chardonnay and Pinot in 1997 and Cabernet in 1998, and later added new Burgundian clones of Chardonnay, for 32 hectares under vine. Wilyabrup's climate is among the closest in Australia to the great Bordeaux vintages, as Dr John Gladstones showed in the 1960s.
Peter's medical background shaped the original model: choosing the best 'specialist' winemaker for each wine. It produced superb wines, but managing production across five wineries became too complex and the estate later centralised its winemaking. The name lives on in The Specialist range, made in small quantities from selected rows of the best fruit.
Thompson Estate achieved Sustainable Winegrowing Australia accreditation in December 2022, with independent audits every three years. Visitors can taste the award-winning wines in the barrel room cellar door.
