Sweetwater Estate in Pokolbin traces its roots to 1844, when the first vines were planted at Sweetwater Station, one of the Hunter Valley's early vineyards. Owner Sam Arnaout and chief winemaker Bryan Currie, only the second winemaker to lead Sweetwater, have written its latest chapter since 2016.
The Shiraz is entirely 1654 clone, grown in three blocks on a gentle hillside of red loam over limestone, giving intense, deeply coloured fruit. The Semillon grows unusually on the hilltop in deep red loam, giving a richer, more textural style than most Hunter Semillon. Hand-picked Cabernet, Mataro and Touriga are also grown.
The 2023 Sweetwater Shiraz won four trophies at the Hunter Valley Wine Show. Tastings are held at the Hungerford Hill cellar door seven days a week.
