Sterling Heights is a small family-run vineyard and winery at St Helens, the first in Tasmania's Bay of Fires area. Geoff and Jenny Wells began in 1987 by buying a property on the West Tamar and planting their first vineyard; Geoff later found that some of his ancestors grew grapes in Germany in the 1800s.
By 1992 the young vines were producing commercial quantities, and wines under the Sterling Heights label won many medals from 1993. After twelve vintages Geoff and Jenny moved to the East Coast, bringing a few vines to plant the St Helens vineyard.
The new vineyard grows a broader range of grapes, made into three blends. Geoff and Jenny still handle all the viticulture and winemaking.
