Steels Creek Estate was established in the Yarra Valley in 1981 by Simon, who bought land in the upper Steels Creek valley in 1980. In 1981 he hand-planted the front vineyard with Colombard, Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, and in 1994 added a back block of Shiraz and Chardonnay. Simon graduated in viticulture and winemaking from Charles Sturt University in 1998.
The vines are hand-pruned, prunings are mulched back into the soil and only organic fertilisers are used, with close attention to canopy management and crop thinning.
The cellar door is inside the winery, with a view of the operations and occasional barrel tastings, a succulent garden and views towards Kinglake National Park.
