Sidewood Estate is a family-owned Adelaide Hills winery founded in 2004 by Owen and Cassandra Inglis. Owen, born in Hong Kong and schooled in Sydney, was drawn to the Mappinga Road property at Oakbank by his love of horses; it happened to have vines on it, and a retirement plan gradually became a new business and a consuming passion. Cassandra grew up in Perth in a family of wine enthusiasts and began studying wine at 18.
Sidewood now has 110 hectares across four vineyards at Oakbank, Charleston, Echunga and Nairne, reflecting the diversity of the Adelaide Hills, and a state-of-the-art winery led by winemaker Dylan Lee. Its elegant cool-climate wines have earned a five red star winery rating from James Halliday. The Inglises built environmental responsibility in from the start: Sidewood is the region's largest certified sustainable producer, accredited by Sustainable Winegrowing Australia, switched to a 205kW solar system in 2016, uses sheep for natural fertilisation, avoids synthetic chemicals and manages water carefully, and its 4.8-hectare winery Shiraz vineyard has been certified organic since 2022.
The cellar door is at Hahndorf, and the estate hosts events from casual gatherings to wine-matched degustations.
