Sevenhill Cellars

Sevenhill Cellars was the first winery built in the Clare Valley and is one of the oldest in Australia. Its roots go back to the Jesuits, the order co-founded in the 16th century by the Spanish courtier Inigo, now known as St Ignatius. Fleeing religious persecution in Central Europe, the first Jesuit fathers and brothers to reach Australia landed in South Australia in 1848, and Father Kranewitter travelled 120 kilometres north to Clare with more than 100 German and Silesian migrants, soon joined by Brothers Georg Sadler and Joannes Schreiner.

In 1849 they bought 100 acres and named the property Sevenhill, after the seven hills of Rome. Gardens, orchards and simple accommodation came first, and the first vines were planted in 1851 to save the cost of importing wine from Europe. Production began five years later, focused on sacramental wine for the Eucharist, and the mission went on to establish 34 churches, 27 schools and a college.

Today Sevenhill makes wines that express the authentic styles and flavours of the Clare Valley, and the historic cellar door welcomes wine lovers, tourists and history buffs alike, with experienced staff guiding tastings through the diverse range.
