Richard Hamilton

The Hamilton family has been part of South Australian wine for more than 180 years. Richard Hamilton (1792 to 1852) arrived at Holdfast Bay with his wife and eight children on 17 October 1837 after a four-month voyage from England on the Katherine Stewart Forbes, took out Land Order 449, and soon planted some of the first vineyards on the Adelaide plains, from cuttings sourced from a friend in Cape Town. Those vines became the foundation of the Hamilton Ewell Wine Company, and early plantings required clearing the land by hand, horse and axe.

Today Dr Richard Hamilton continues a tradition that spans five generations of grape growing and winemaking, now centred on McLaren Vale. The family's estate vineyards include some of the oldest vines in the region: the vineyard behind the Centurion Old Vines Shiraz was planted in 1892, and Burton's Vineyard has Grenache planted in 1947 by Richard's father Burton Hamilton, with Shiraz added in 1963 and Cabernet Sauvignon in 1968. White varieties come from the cool-climate Adelaide Hills.

The wines aim to be authentic, expressive and regional, and great value for their award-winning quality. The McLaren Vale cellar door on Main Road opens seven days a week for hosted wine flights, regional platters and wine-infused pies.
