Redgate

Redgate is a family winery less than eight minutes' drive from Margaret River town, near the coast where the Indian and Southern Oceans meet. Bill Ullinger established it in 1977 with 20 acres of vines, and it has grown into a 55-acre vineyard with its own winery and cellar door, and a strong reputation for premium wine.

The name comes from a local story Bill likes to tell. In the early 1900s, when Margaret River was nearly two days by carriage from Perth and the nearest pub was hard to reach, a farmer with a prominent red gate inland from what is now Redgate Beach is said to have started a slightly illegal spirit still for the locals. When the Ullingers made their first vintage in 1981, Bill felt the story suited what he wanted Redgate to be: a warm, friendly place to enjoy a drink.

Redgate is still owned and run by the same family, with Bill's son-in-law Ray now running the winery. Visitors are welcome to bring a picnic and enjoy the views.
