Pirramimma

Pirramimma is one of McLaren Vale's oldest family-owned wineries, founded in 1892 by A.C. Johnston on land that still makes up most of its more than 100 hectares of vineyards. Four generations of the Johnston family have run the business, making it one of Australia's oldest wineries still in family hands.

Current custodian Geoff Johnston has overseen more than fifty vintages. The family has spent decades bringing the vineyard soils back to organic health, and Pirramimma pioneered varieties now seen as well suited to the region's warming climate, notably Petit Verdot and Tannat, alongside McLaren Vale classics such as Shiraz and Grenache. The winery has been named Best Australian Producer at the AWC Vienna international wine competition four times.

The cellar door is in the original winery building, which feels like a step back to the early 1900s, and offers tastings of everything from sparkling wines to rare old fortifieds.
