Pierro

Pierro is one of Margaret River's most respected wineries, founded by Mike Peterkin at Wilyabrup. After graduating in medicine from the University of Western Australia in 1973, Mike studied winemaking at Roseworthy Agricultural College, and from 1978 to 1981 made wine at Enterprise Wines in Clare, Cullen Wines in Margaret River and Alkoomi in the Great Southern. For 25 years he juggled careers as a country doctor and as viticulturist and winemaker, before devoting himself full-time to his wines.

Mike was anything but conventional in establishing Pierro. It was the original high-density vineyard in Margaret River and one of the first in Australia, with 4,000 to 5,500 vines per hectare against a conventional 1,900, to make the vines more competitive and balanced.

The winery is an integral part of Margaret River's remarkable wine history. Its cellar door sits among the vines and winery off Caves Road, in the heart of Wilyabrup.
