Paul Osicka Wines is the longest-established wine producer in the Heathcote region. Paul Osicka senior, a Czech vigneron whose family made wine from at least 1790, had built a large wine business in Czechoslovakia but became a refugee after the Second World War. He emigrated to Australia with his wife Rosalie and young family, and in 1955 found land near the old gold-mining town of Graytown, where he planted a vineyard with the help of friends and family.
The mature vines are dry-grown on sandy loam over quartz and red ironstone gravel. They are hand-pruned, shoot- and fruit-thinned, and hand-picked and sorted, giving small, intensely flavoured grapes. Critics praise the old-vine site, the gentle winemaking and the wines' family character.
