Paracombe Wines

Paracombe Wines is a family-owned winery high in the Adelaide Hills, run by the Drogemuller family. Its beginnings came out of adversity: after the 1983 Ash Wednesday bushfires, the family planted a vineyard on an old dairy farm and made their first wines in a tin shed. The township of Paracombe, settled in 1840 as a sheep station, takes its name from the Little Para River, whose headwaters rise nearby, and 'combe', a steep narrow valley; it sits beside the Torrens Gorge amid vineyards and orchards.

The vineyard lies on an ancient plateau 425 metres above sea level, on Barossa Complex soils around 1.7 billion years old, the oldest rocks in the Mount Lofty Ranges. The lean soils are layered with ironstone, buckshot gravel and quartz, the remnant of an ancient riverbed with spring water beneath, so vine roots grow deep and draw up minerals that shape the wines.

The family describes its wines as honouring story and place, and puts sustainability and care for the environment at the heart of its approach from vine to glass. Its success is credited to the commitment of the whole Drogemuller family and team, and the cellar door hosts tastings and seasonal weekends.
