Oranje Tractor is a small family winery and organic farm at Marbelup near Albany, on Western Australia's south coast, founded by Murray and Pamela with the help of many friends, family and guests. Murray grew up on a dairy farm in the Albany region and worked in health promotion; Pamela, a city-raised nutritionist, became fascinated by wine and studied winemaking by distance through Charles Sturt University in the early 1990s.
The vineyard sits 64 metres above sea level and less than 10 kilometres from the coast, giving it a true maritime climate. The couple built a sustainable, energy-efficient home, and since 2000 have welcomed WWOOF travellers who help in the vineyard and gardens. Thanks to extensive tree planting, the property absorbs about six times the carbon its vineyard emits, without offsets.
The rustic tasting room, full of vintage items, is reached by a meander through the organic gardens. Their book, This Tractor Life, is part cookbook, part story of life on the farm.
