Norton Estate is a family vineyard at Lower Norton, 15 kilometres south-west of Horsham in western Victoria. It began in 1996, when Wendy and Don Spence retired and bought a small farm there. A 2000 government study found the area highly suited to premium wine grapes, with one CSIRO soil scientist suggesting it could be among the best sites in the state.
Wendy, Don and their son Chris planted a first hectare of Shiraz, whose early quality surprised even the critics, and followed it with Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc and more Shiraz.
Lower Norton had grown wine in the late 1800s, when settlers established a vineyard, winery and orchards along the Wimmera River, until drought, salinity and disease ended them in the early 1900s. Norton Estate is the first vineyard planted in the area since.
