Narkoojee

Narkoojee, meaning 'place of flowers', is a family winery in the foothills of the Great Dividing Range at Glengarry North in Gippsland, Victoria. The property started as a dairy farm run by Edna and Athelstan Friend in the early 1940s. Their son Harry planted the first experimental vines in 1980 and moved there from Melbourne with his wife Val in 1995.

The beginnings were humble: the cellar door was a small weatherboard bungalow behind the house, and the old butter factory in Glengarry served as the first winery. Today there are 15 hectares of vines, and Narkoojee holds James Halliday's five red star rating, with acclaim from wine writers and drinkers around the world. Harry shares the winemaking with his son, chief winemaker Axel Friend, and the pair love experimenting with new techniques.

The cellar door offers tasting flights with local cheese and produce, looking out over the vineyard to the ranges.
