Mitchell is a small, family-owned winery at Penwortham in South Australia's Clare Valley, run by three generations growing grapes and making wine with a regional and sustainable focus. In 1949 Peter McNicol Mitchell moved his family to a mixed farm at Clare, with a dairy, an orchard and a small, undeveloped patch of vines, working long days without modern machinery.
His son Andrew grew up with the highs and lows of farm life and took over the family farm in 1975, establishing Mitchell Wines. He combined his father's traditional methods with modern winemaking learned on studies around the world. Andrew and his wife Jane built the business, and now share it with their children Hilary, Angus and Edwina.
The cellar door on Hughes Park Road welcomes visitors to taste the family's Clare Valley wines.
