Mewstone Wines

Mewstone is a small, family-owned winery at Flowerpot in southern Tasmania, about 40 minutes south of Hobart on the D'Entrecasteaux Channel. It was established in 2011 by brothers Jonny and Matthew Hughes. Jonny leads the winemaking, with experience in Australia, New Zealand, Italy and Canada and seven years as assistant winemaker at Moorilla in Hobart.

The vineyard, a former cherry orchard, is nearing its final size of 5.2 hectares and, after early trials, is focused on Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Riesling. Being close to the water moderates temperatures and lengthens the season, giving slow, even ripening and great purity. Mewstone is the estate flagship; the winemaking is minimal-intervention, with wild ferments, no unnecessary additions and no fining. The brothers also make hughes & hughes single-site wines.

The cellar door is open Friday to Monday, with guided tastings and grazing platters on the deck.
