Maverick Wines

Maverick Wines is a Barossa producer founded in 2004 by Ronald Brown, a viticulturist who had practised biodynamic farming in France since 1993, including eight years working alongside the late François Bouchet. He brought that technology and philosophy to Australia, and Maverick's vineyards are farmed biodynamically, organically or sustainably, making it one of the leading biodynamic producers in the New World.

Although the business is young, its vines are not: the average vine age is around a hundred years, with the oldest Grenache and Semillon dating from the 1840s, Riesling from the 1860s and Shiraz from the 1870s. The property includes a partly restored settlers' house from 1846, and the estate draws fruit from both the warmer Barossa Valley floor and the cooler, higher Eden Valley.

The aim is complex but elegant, food-friendly wines from estate-grown fruit. Maverick has been rated a red five-star winery by James Halliday, won Best Australian and Best World Shiraz at the first International Wine Challenge China in 2019, and its wines are poured in several three-Michelin-star restaurants in Paris. In 2022 Ronald Brown was a finalist for Halliday's inaugural Australian Viticulturist of the Year.
