Lofty Valley Estate began in 2004 as a new beginning for Brian Gilbert, a medical doctor who dreamed of making cool-climate Adelaide Hills wine. In September 2004 he found 32 steep acres in the Piccadilly Valley close to Adelaide, with perfect slopes and plenty of rain (in most years the wettest spot in South Australia), complete with a waterfall and a permanent creek.
Four acres of Chardonnay went in during 2004-05 and two acres of Pinot Noir in 2007, and Brian moved into the finished home in 2008. In 2007 Canadian artisan Lani Ramsey joined him. Production was tiny, about 500 to 800 cases a year.
The vineyard was sold in 2024 so Brian and Lani could pursue new horizons, but Lofty Valley's small-production wines remain available online.
