Kumeu River is a family winery at Kumeū in New Zealand, whose story parallels the growth of the New Zealand wine industry. Maté Brajkovich, the family pioneer, built the winery's reputation and married Melba in 1957; she went on to become one of the country's most experienced figures in wine and was made a member of the NZ Order of Merit in 2014.
After Maté's death in 1992 the family continued his work, and the best single-vineyard Chardonnay carries his name. Winemaker Michael Brajkovich, a 2024 New Zealand Winegrowers Fellow, makes Chardonnay in a classic French style, and Milan manages the 40 hectares of vineyards, including those of regional growers.
The estate's 30 hectares sit on clay over sandstone, and Pinot Noir has been grown there since the mid-1980s.
