Howard Vineyard

Howard Vineyard in the Adelaide Hills is named after Amos William Howard, who settled at Blakiston in 1889 and ran a nursery growing flowers and shrubs. That year, while waiting to buy a cow from a neighbour, he walked along a nearby creek and noticed an unusual plant growing vigorously. It was subterranean clover, and his breeding program, which released its first variety in 1906, made it the most important pasture plant in Australia.

The vineyard and cellar door now stand on the site of his discovery near Nairne, and his contribution to Australian agriculture is also commemorated in Mount Barker's coat of arms. Howard Vineyard makes cool-climate Adelaide Hills wines, including sparkling wines, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and Shiraz, from its estate vineyards.

The business is a member of Sustainable Winegrowing Australia. Its cellar door offers award-winning wines, food experiences and views across the Adelaide Hills.
