Hewitson

Hewitson is a Barossa Valley winery whose estate lies along the banks of the Para River on the historic Seppeltsfield Road. Its owner and winemaker, affectionately known as the Mad Hatter, has spent a lifetime with vines, from planting vines and collecting wine labels as a child to vintages in Oregon's Willamette Valley and the Adelaide Hills. The philosophy is that great wines express their soils and seasons, and Hewitson explores exciting new takes on traditional varieties and blends.

The winery's great treasure is The Old Garden, planted in 1853 by Friedrich Koch on land at Rowland Flat bought in 1844, and renowned as the oldest Mourvèdre vines on Earth. Just eight rows of these dry-grown, pre-phylloxera Barossa Ancestor vines still grow on their own roots. A single 1853 Shiraz vine found in the middle of The Old Garden has been propagated, bud by bud, into one hectare of ancient selection clonale vines with their own flavour and tannin profile, and baby bush Mourvèdre was struck from the Old Garden mother vines in 1997.

Each year the best barrels from the Old Garden and Monopole vineyards, both of exclusively 1853 provenance, are blended into the BARREL 1853 Shiraz Mourvèdre. The winery combines state-of-the-art and traditional practices with a soft footprint on the land, paying close attention to drainage, soil health and biodiversity.
