Helm

Helm Wines was established in 1973 at Murrumbateman by Ken and Judith Helm, and has grown into one of the leading wineries in the Canberra District. Ken is descended from German vignerons who planted vines in the Albury district in the 1850s.

Helm specialises in award-winning Riesling and Cabernet Sauvignon, with several vineyards dedicated to these two varieties. It remains a family affair: daughter Stephanie began making wine at Helm aged nine and now runs The Vintner's Daughter winery nearby with her husband Ben Osborne, son Matthew is an international chef, and daughter Natalie works in public relations.

The cellar door is in the heritage-listed 1888 Toual Schoolhouse, a tiny wooden building that the area's Methodist temperance ladies would surely be horrified to see today.
