Giesen is a family winery in Marlborough, New Zealand, founded by three brothers, the sons of a German stonemason. While travelling in 1979 they arrived in New Zealand, and in 1981 Theo and Alex Giesen bought land and planted a vineyard near Christchurch. Their first vintage was in 1984, when Marlborough was little known, and drawing on their German heritage they saw the potential of its cool climate.
Giesen built its Marlborough winery in 2000 and has acquired vineyards across the Wairau Valley. Its Sauvignon Blanc has become hugely popular around the world, alongside Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, German-style Riesling and alcohol-removed wines. In 2009 the brothers began an organic journey and challenged the team to push boundaries, leading to The August 1888 Sauvignon Blanc in 2010, honouring their grandfather, and Single Vineyard Selection wines led by Clayvin.
About 11% of Giesen's vineyards are now certified organic, and the brothers remain involved every day.
