Gertie Wines is a small family vineyard in the hill country of the Clare Valley, with two hectares of Riesling and Cabernet Franc and a tiny patch of Grenache Gris.
The owners spent 18 months detouring past the block before finally meeting Leo, an elderly man pruning the vines, whose family had owned the stone cottage and land since the 1860s. He was delighted to find new custodians.
The family is restoring the old cottage as a home, and tends the vineyard by hand, which brings them a sense of peace and fulfilment.
