Derwent Estate is a family-owned vineyard on the Mt Nassau property beside the Derwent River in southern Tasmania, where Andrew Hanigan represents the fifth generation of the family business. Rathbone Cottage, built around 1820, and the Homestead, built around 1830, survived the 1967 bushfires that destroyed the original shed, and the cottage is now the cellar door, with tastings of 12 wines by the fire or on the verandah overlooking the river.
Winemaker John Schuts began in Western Australia and refined his craft in Burgundy before his passion for Pinot drew him to Tasmania, where he discovered Derwent Estate's fruit. The vineyard manager has worked on the estate since he was 13.
The winery, built in 2013, is made from 1,100 straw bales, with walls 450 millimetres thick that give excellent insulation, and 'The Shed' restaurant, on the site of the original shed, serves local produce matched to the estate's wines.
