Chateau Pâto was established in 1979, when David and Helen Paterson bought 40 acres at Pokolbin in the Hunter Valley and began planting. David, a journalist who wrote many books about Hunter wine and presented a music program, shaped the property's design.
After David died in 1993, his son Nick took over the vineyard and winemaking. The vineyard is one of the few in the Hunter that is not irrigated, is managed mostly by hand, and all fruit is hand-picked.
The flagship DJP Shiraz comes from the original 1981 plantings, and the Old Pokolbin Vineyard Shiraz from vines over 50 years old. Tastings are by appointment with Nick.
