Cape Mentelle

Cape Mentelle is one of the 'founding five' wineries of Margaret River. It was established in 1970 by wine pioneer David Hohnen and his brothers Mark and Giles, starting with 16 hectares on what is now the Wallcliffe Vineyard. In the early years David experimented with Shiraz, Cabernet, Zinfandel, Sauvignon Blanc and more, and helped shape many of the region's signature styles.

Cape Mentelle won the Jimmy Watson Trophy for the best one-year-old dry red in 1983, and again in 1984, and its Cabernet Sauvignon is regarded as one of Australia's best. Zinfandel, which David came to love while studying in California, also became a signature. Today the winery draws on extensive mature estate vineyards, and critics count it among the contenders for Winery of the Year.

Cape Mentelle is a certified member of Sustainable Winegrowing Australia. Its cellar door is on Wallcliffe Road, just outside Margaret River town.
