Box Grove Vineyard is in the parish of Tabilk in central Victoria, 110 kilometres north-east of Melbourne, where vines have grown for more than 150 years among tall river red gums. Winemaker Sarah Gunn specialises in Rhône varieties, Shiraz, Roussanne and Viognier, which have found a second home here.
Tabilk has belts of deep red soil and others of granite sand over ancient river gravel. The whites, Roussanne and Vermentino, grow on the granite and are known for minerality and complexity, while the reds grow on the region's famous red soil. Sarah aims to tread lightly: the vineyard is fed with home-made compost and managed to avoid sprays and chemicals, and the winery uses minimal handling.
Young Gun of Wine named the 2021 Shiraz Roussanne a top pick in its Deep Dive blind tasting. Box Grove also grows capers.
