Apsley Gorge Vineyard is in the Apsley Valley, about 14 km from Bicheno on Tasmania's East Coast. Former abalone diver and lobster fisherman Brian Franklin planted it with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in the early 1990s.
Brian took over the winemaking in the late 1990s and quickly gained recognition. He learned the traditional French style with Philippe Charlopin in Burgundy and has worked a vintage there every year since.
The seven-hectare vineyard is non-irrigated and low-yielding, and is hand-pruned and hand-picked.
