A. Retief is the label of winemaker Alex Retief, combining an Old World philosophy with the cool-climate terroir of New South Wales. His story began in the mid-1990s, when his parents planted a vineyard near Ladysmith, outside Gundagai, which sparked his passion for wine.
Alex studied wine science at Charles Sturt University and trained at its winery, then worked at Fetzer in Sonoma, with Andrew Margan in the Hunter Valley, and in Bordeaux as winemaker at Château de Lagarde. He launched A. Retief in 2008, sourcing fruit from the family's biodynamic vineyard at Gundagai and from trusted cool-climate growers across southern NSW, especially in Tumbarumba and Hilltops.
The focus is on the vineyard and elegance in the bottle, without over-oaking. The range includes Tumbarumba whites, cool-climate Shiraz, Hilltops Italian varieties and, in exceptional years only, a straight Petit Verdot.
